Dance Umbrella Development programme

Dance Forum is proud to announce that, in partnership with Rand Merchant Bank, it will be facilitating a new project that will professionally develop South African contemporary dance practitioners in the Northern Cape and Limpopo. This three-year Dance XChange project will enable them to create, perform and diversify their creativity and professional skill to ultimately earn a sustainable living from being performing arts professionals.

Face to Face with the choreographers

Dance Umbrella 2012, principally funded by the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, is scheduled to run from February 17 to March 4, 2012. For fifteen days Johannesburg will be engulfed by contemporary dance which can be seen at the Market Theatre complex, Wits Theatre, The Dance Factory, the Goodman Gallery at Goethe on Main and Johannesburg Stock Exchange.

Young Choreographers Residency Programme

Dance Umbrella’s principal funder, The National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, has allocated funding to Dance Forum, the management company of Dance Umbrella 2012, for the Young Choreographers’ Residency programme which will take place during the festival, from February 22 to March 3, 2012.

Commissioned work and collaborations

Dance Umbrella 2012, presented by Dance Forum in association with the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund (Principal funder), The National Arts Council, Goethe-Institut South Africa, Embassy of Belgium Delegation of the Flemish Government and the Spanish Embassy Mzansi Cultura, runs from February 17 to March 4, 2012. Venues this year include the Market Theatre, Wits Theatre, Goodman on Main at Arts on Main, Old Stock Exchange inner city Joburg and the Dance Factory in Newtown.

Opera for Fools

The backdrop for Opera for Fools depicts the Shebeen lifestyle that was lived in the South African townships of Johannesburg, where it framed the centre stage for some of the dramatic events that took place between the 1970s and 1990s.

Out of This Body

Moya Michael, international dancer/choreographer of note, has lent her personality and skill to renowned choreographers Anna Teresa de Keersmaecker and Akram Khan. Now she is to offer the public a uniquely, innovative solo work - a raw, intimate study and deconstruction of her identity used as a mirror to humanity’s struggle to define itself in a shapeless, fragile and always boundless reality.

Other Highlights

Stepping Stones:A wonderful celebration of the wide diversity of South African dance. Saturday and Sunday, February 18 & 19 @ 10:00:The Wits Theatre.

The Young Choreographers Workshop Programme: Facilitated by Alfred Hinkel, this ten day workshop will assist young choreographers in finding new tools to creating dance works.

Dance Writers Workshop: Funded by the Goethe Institute: Johannesburg a workshop for dance writers will be facilitated by Mary Corrigall. The participants will go through a process of learning more about reviewing and writing about dance and dance articles by the participants and other selected journalists will be written for a special edition of Dance Umbrella 2012.

Face to Face Discussions: Selected choreographers will discuss their work with Adrienne Sichel and audience members are welcome to attend and take part in the conversation. These face to face meetings will take place at selected times after performances or during the day. Watch press for details.
